+26 To give you an idea of how hard it is to win the lottery:

Here in Australia at least, you can choose a system game. If you choose a system 18 (most expensive game) in a general lottery (1 million dollars). Costs about $13k AUD just to play a single game. But you can choose 18 numbers, but you only need 6 numbers to get the lottery from 1-45.

I pretend played with 18 numbers, and failed many times. I hypothetically lost money in 6 digits. I couldn't even land 5 out of 6 numbers.

+20 @BadJimo A system 18 is the equivalent of 18,564 individual entries. Each entry has a 1 in 8,145,060 chance of winning. The probability of a system 18 getting all 6 numbers is 18,564/8,145,060 ≈ 0.0028 ≈ 1 in 357

+10 @pheen Here's a simulator, you can run up to 100 drawings/second. I did the Mega Millions and I let it run for $10,000 worth of tickets and had won $700 (so down $9,300), I did a bit better with the second $10,000, total winning tickets were up to $1,626, so only down $18,374. https://lottosimulation.com/
