If I were Filthy Rich

+62 What are some fun but "useless" things you'd do/buy with your millions?

Everyone wants to get those mansions, cars, fancy clothes etc. but what about the items or ideas that are a little more... "out there"?

Here's a silly but fun thing I'd buy if I won the lottery:

I'm both into geography as well as into astronomy. For this reason, I like globes a lot. I actually have an old one that my parents once bought for me but I don't really use it anymore.

If I had tens of millions of dollars, I'd first purchase a mansion with a large room. The room needs to have a high ceiling. Next I would find someone to build me a beautiful, custom-made globe. But not the 30-inchers that you typically see in stores. My globe would have a diameter of 5-6 meters (17-20ft). The mountains and valleys on the surface would be to scale. Fun fact: on a 5m (16.5ft) globe, Mount Everest would be a mere 3.5mm (0.138 in). The globe would be installed in a way that it would rotate on its own axis, just like Earth. At one point in the room, I would have a strong light source installed that would simulate the sun. The rotation of my globe would be adjusted to the real rotation of Earth. In other words: one rotation would take precisely 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4 seconds. Whenever it would be noon in, say, real Paris, it would also be noon in Paris on my globe. Finally, I would want all the major cities in the world be marked with a small LED-light. The light would switch to yellow (or turn off) whenever that city moved towards daylight and it would switch to red when the city was on the night-side of the planet. Maybe I could include another few cool special effects to make the whole installation more authentic but these are the ones I can think of right now.

But since it's more fun to share stuff like that, I maybe wouldn't install it in my own house. Perhaps I would buy a restaurant or coffee shop and install it there. I'm sure my customers would love it just as much as I would. Especially if it was a romantic dinner restaurant with relatively dim lighting, a globe like that would look very imposing (in a cool way).

Another fun idea I had was to buy a plot of land at a central location (in a city) and turn it into a park that is owned privately (by me) but can be entered and enjoyed by anyone. However, it wouldn't simply be some rando park. It would be a giant world map, at a scale of maybe 100x200 meters. The oceans would be ponds. The continents would be individual "islands" in that pond that'd have their real shape (just like on a world map). Some continents such as North and South America would be connected, others would have to be accessed individually (by exiting and entering at a different place). The major deserts such as the Sahara or the Gobi would be sandboxes for kids to play. Other areas of the map would have trees for shade (maybe South America and Scandinavia) and yet other areas would have a large lawn to sit and chill. In India or China I'd put up a few of those tables where you can sit down and play chess. On a "map" of 100x200 meters, that would give us a total land area of roughly 6,000m2 (64,600 feet2). That's slightly less than the area of a soccer field. Too crazy big but it would still look awesome. Of course if it was 2-3 times as large, it would be even way more cool... but it might be too expensive to buy so much land in a populated area, even if you've got 100 millions dollars.

Anyway, what do you think about my idea and what sort of quirky/fun ideas do you have?

+20 @TJCasperson I would 100% wait until one of those auctions of movie props happened, and by the full size screen used model of the Star Trek Deep Space 9 space station. It would cost 10,000,000+ dollars and I would hang it from my foyer like a chandelier.

+13 @defaultedtothisname I've always thought it would be great to make the world a more eccentric, whimsical place by giving strangers experiences that they couldn't quite relay without sounding crazy. For example, hire a college student for $40/hr to walk up to couples at a picnic table, say oh there's you are and reach into a bucket and put a handful of ice down, then walkaway. Or have 60 people dressed as Grover in a park just going about life as normal. Hire a sky writer to write - Your move Brian and have people wonder what the backstory is. Little things to take people out of the mundane.
