If I were Filthy Rich
By StrongAsMeat
+58 Do you think your mental health would change if you won? (In a bad way)

I think about winning literally every day, and more and more I fear I would become paranoid. I would be (even) more reclusive, overly cautious, untrusting…

On the other hand I would be more generous, active, and I know I wouldn’t be one of those winners who goes bankrupt by buying stupid shit and blowing it in Vegas or on drugs or cars.

+70 @Magiamarado I work in high finance in NYC. Pretty much everyone at work is a millionaire on paper and the CEO is on the Forbes ranking. Everyone is living normal lives for the most part. Yeah some of my peers have 6-7 houses, a driver and sometimes travel private, but the difference between their life and mine is not that substantial. The CEO is in the office every week, he takes the subway sometimes, eats lunch at the same spots I do, has no security, dresses with On shoes and regular slacks and a button down shirt. Winning the lottery won’t suddenly give you fame, power and recognition, you’re just a dude that’s loaded. The key is to know how money works. If you have that you know how to produce and keep it. Learn how to create barriers with people and push boundaries. Also, have a purpose in life. You need to have a reason to work.

+28 @passion4film Realistically I think the lack of money stress and increase in freedoms would do nothing but good.

+19 @StrongAsMeat Good part is I’d be able to afford great therapy

+17 @Letters_to_Dionysus nah it'd just be an adjustment period

+12 @Chance-Work4911 Mine would be SOOOOO much better. I would love a job that feels good instead of just a job that pays the bills. Everything in the former category makes about half the salary I’m already at so I can’t just switch for quality of life benefits. If I had even a small(ish) win that could make up the difference for 5-10 years I’d be a much kinder and gentler person to everyone around me and I would feel good again in my soul.

+11 @True_Character4986 In my state you can be anonymous, and I'm not a flashy person so I don't think I would be paranoid. I worry about money all the time and I have kids so winning the lottery would help my mental health a lot.

+10 @KrAff2010 I can’t imagine a windfall like that not affecting your mental health in some way at least. Bare minimum the lifestyle changes are going to fundamentally change you in some way or another. Paranoia is a common response. So is a “savior” attitude towards giving. Honestly I think the best course of action would just be to find a good therapist, do what good you can well still setting yourself up for life. Some change would be good just don’t lose sight of who you were before the win and try to stay as true to yourself as possible
