+15 How Do Canadian Lottery Winners Handle Public Exposure and Security Risks?

I’ve been reading a lot of posts and stories about people advising to stay quiet after winning the lottery and remain anonymous to avoid being targeted for money, robbery, or harassment.

Unfortunately, in Canada, lottery winners of substantial amounts must have their photo taken, be featured in multiple news articles, and be promoted on social media to advertise the lottery. Anytime you search their name it would show a bunch of articles, images and story about you.

My question is: how do you handle this? Being suddenly rich and publicly known feels risky—your face everywhere, people potentially showing up at your home or trying to rob you at night. What can winners do to protect themselves in this situation?
