i’m a little confused on anonymity. Wouldn’t the government always know who won. like obviously going through lawyers and taxes ofc. but wouldn’t the banks know too. and you’d have to answer to a lot of others idk i feel like ur always choosing between 20 people knowing and 20,000 (which there’s obviously a difference) but growing up i always believed only i would know😭😭

+42 @ReadRightRed99 The government (IRS, state) is only interested in confiscating their pound of flesh, not broadcasting your win to the public. The lottery commission will report your winnings just like your other legitimate income is reported. If you claim in a trust, it gives you a layer of anonymity in this process. But at the end of the day, of course the tax authorities will have a record and will expect you to pay up. The people you don’t want to know are friends, family, neighbors, strangers, former friends, etc.

+28 @TheSchwartzIsWithMe Anonymity is for the general public, not the government. It's so that the media and the neighbors down the street won't be able to look up the winner and see your name and face and how much you won. It adds a layer of protection so you don't have nearly as many people harassing you for money. The government *will* know because you need to submit your information in order to collect the winnings.

+17 @reddity-mcredditface Has anybody ever suggested that your *government* wouldn't know? You would still need to file taxes in your country. What are you confused about?
