If I were Filthy Rich

+31 How would you break the news to your immediate family?

We have the choice of anonymity in the UK and I will be staying anonymous. However, I can’t imagine winning and not telling my parents and siblings. So, if you are close with your family and you won a life changing sum of money, how will you break the news to them?

What I would do:

Once I’ve called the lottery people and confirmed my ticket is in-fact the winning jackpot ticket, I’ll gather everyone in the kitchen and secretly set my phone up to record the reaction.

Then I’ll say like a minute long speech about how we didn’t have the easiest upbringing but we still made the most out of life etc etc.

[They’ll probably think I’m about to announce being pregnant or something like that lol because I’ve never spoke about the lottery to them so becoming overnight millionaires would be the last thing on their mind].

After the speech I’d dramatically open my laptop and show everyone the screen that says ‘WINNER - £xxx, xxx, xxx’ and before they ask if it’s real, I’d say something like ‘I wouldn’t prank you guys like this, this is 100% real, we can do anything we want!!!!’

Whilst everyone is jumping for joy, hugging and screaming, I’ll put on the song ‘celebrate’ and join in with the jumping and screaming! ☺️

+29 @GroundForcesWTX I wouldn't tell them. I would try my best to keep it away from my family. It helps tremendously that I live in a very remote part of Texas -- an ideal place to live for someone who wants to be under the radar. Even with that, I would likely live out of hotel rooms overseas for quite a while.

+21 @veertamizhan Do add a line on how Brexit has had a negative impact on the British economy.

+14 @kitsua Like you OP (and unlike all the people here who apparently hate their families), I get on well with mine and would celebrate with them (absolutely no one else would know). However, I wouldn’t tell them exactly how much I’d won. I just think it’s only prudent. The other commenters are right, money can do funny things to people. I’d just calmly say “everyone here is now a millionaire” and hand them a cheque each, with the explicit proviso that this is all they’re getting. This way they’ve got what they’ve got that they can enjoy any way they want and that’s that.

+10 @fappyday I absolutely would not tell my immediate family if I won a large amount of money. I'd tell them that I won *some smaller* amount of money and split up the "winnings" as I see fit. They would each sign a non-disclosure agreement. I already know who would break that agreement and why. If they came after me for anything else I'd hold that NDA over their head for the rest of their lives.
