There’s more than enough stories about people winning the lottery and being broke in 3-5 years because they spent it all helping others.

The most common average answer they give is that they regret even cashing the ticket in to begin with. I, like most, feel like we would make it work - but all relationships change and for the worse.

+18 @BowlingForPizza Money changes people. That's why. People get greedy. People get violent. When many millions are on the line, it only amplifies the emotions. Others feel like they deserve it more. Or they deserve it in a way that you never did. Because you didn't "earn it". And thus, they feel that they are entitled to stealing from you, scamming you, unaliving you, or a host of many different solutions to ensure that they are in possession of the money. And not you. Human beings are not rational people. A lifetime of being poor. Or a lifetime of perceived unfairness, bad luck, or financial suffering can fuel anger, hatred, or other emotions like entitlement and greed. All can make someone feel like they deserve it all more than you ever did. Especially if they are a close contact. "Why did THEY win it? They haven't put as much effort into life as I have. Why was \*I\* overlooked by God/Fate/The Universe, etc."?

+14 @Beginning_Lifeguard7 The real problem is that lottery winners are often not very financially savvy. The other problem is that you only hear about the sad stories. I personally had an unexpected, life changing windfall of money. I didn’t have to give up my life and I’ve given substantial amounts to family members. The key is hiring financial and legal experts to help. And the word no is a complete sentence.

+13 @Eagle_Fang135 People hear you win $200M. Well cash option is $100M. Then after taxes you are at $50M. They think you are 4X richer and have a lot more cash. It is a lot. But giving a little here and there adds up. The “just give me $10M you can spare if it is only 5% of your money” when it is really 1/5th. And lots of handouts that even if you gave them money you would run out and still not make them all happy. Lots of people out there that feel they are owed.
