If I were Filthy Rich

+115 I don’t mean to be a buzzkill but, if I won the lottery, the first thing I’d do is get my lawyer on the phone as anyone should do. For 2 reasons:

  1. You may have legal affairs to sort out

  2. A lawyer can claim a prize on a client’s behalf to keep their client anonymous

+79 @siraliases No this is just accurate  Your first call is to your lawyer, the second is to your phone company to disconnect the line

+34 @FOOLS_GOLD Certain states have laws that require the winner to claim it in their name. There are varying levels of anonymity depending on the state where the winner lives and sometimes the size of the prize.

+32 @BabiesatemydingoNSW Not a buzzkill, an attorney is just one of three people you need to have on your team. The other two would be an accountant and an investment professional.

+16 @SmoovCatto set up a trust to claim the winnings anonymously, and to protect them. tell no one, especially family.  quietly pay off all debts, then sit on the assets for a while, till gaining calm perspective . . .  the advice to consult a lawyer is wise -- wiser to consult a large established firm who can set up the trust for you, and know how to keep your secret. but keep a record of every exchange with them -- they will likely charge a standard fee -- expect it to be $20,000 or more -- worth it to protect your $100 million+ jackpot.  their fee will be deducted from the payout.  they will keep the winning ticket in their company safe, and will handle its redemption and deposit into your new  trust account. you of course will have photographic and video evidence of the winning ticket, and of your arrangement with the law firm. an individual lawyer or small legal LLC may cave to temptation, make off with your millions and skip the country . . .

+14 @Egnatsu50 My father in law was a trust officer with a bank. He has worked with lottery winners. He says get in contact with trust officers in a bank.  They will help with lawyers. Help claim the money anonymously and set up a financial plan to be wealthy and manage your money.  (FOR A FEE) He said in 30 years every lottery winner who did not have someone manage their money was bankrupt in 5 years. If anything you use the bank as the "bad guy" when people inevitably ask for money.

+13 @Forward_Teach7675 Some of the best advice I’ve ever gotten in life- If you don’t know what you’re doing in any area, find someone you can trust who does.
