If I were Filthy Rich
By genuinely_insincere+21 I would start with getting a new car
My car is kind of a clunker. So I would get a regular car to start.
(also, I wouldn't even need the jackpot. I would be good with the secondary jackpot, with 500,000 or so.)
I would get a jeep or offroader or something like that. I'm single so I don't really need a minivan or SUV. I'd get something that isn't brand new, but only a few years old. Brand new cars are much more expensive than cars that are a couple years old, I think. Next I would travel around a bit, getting nice airbnbs.
Actually - first I would claim my winnings. Then I would wait for them to arrive. I think it usually takes about 3 months for them to process. Then once they come in, I'd quit work and invest the money in stocks. With 500,000, you would be making about 40,000 a year off of stock growth or dividends. Plus you'd have to pay taxes, I think at the end of the year, with the same rate as income tax. If you take out 40,000, the taxes would probably be around 4000-7000 total. It depends on your state too.
So first I would get a nicer car. Then I would start traveling, going to different cities and staying in nice airbnbs. Eventually I'd settle down somewhere that I like the city's atmosphere. Maybe portland, san francisco, chico, or denver, or albuquerque, or maybe miami. I'd also consider the tax laws. If there's a toss up, I'll go with the place with lower taxes.
Then I'd get an apartment, or condo, or a house. But just a rental, something for about 2000 a month, that is clean, and sensible. Maybe with a pool or something. But I wouldn't really need amenities, because I would probably also join a country club or something, with a pool and hot tub and tennis court and whatnot. I wouldn't buy a house because that would take up all my money. I'd rather just invest in the stock market and live off of it forever, without having to work.
I'd probably go out to the bar or clubs or parties or what have you. Stuff that I normally can't do because I have work and I also need to save my money for rent. I'd go snowboarding and skiing in the winter (something I've always wanted to do) and water skiing and jet skiing and boating in the summer (something I did once and liked it a lot). I'd smoke weed again, and maybe a little coke here and there, but nothing too crazy.
I'd probably get bored with no work at all, so I'd probably find some kind of work. I think I'd find a "fun" job, like working at an amusement park or movie theater, or something. Anything that is pretty easy and just part time or something like that.
I think I'd also pursue some career options. Like maybe look into acting, or voice acting. Also making art, making music, painting, making crafts. Things that I wouldn't normally do for money but that I might do in my spare time as a hobby, and then sell the product if there happen to be any buyers. Maybe take up interesting hobbies like glassblowing or carpentry or something random, like building surf boards. Maybe try writing a book or something.
I'd probably also volunteer at homeless shelters, and fundraise for charitable causes, since I'd have a lot of free time on my hands.
Once I settled down I'd get a pet again. Maybe a cat or a small dog, or a pet pigeon. They are cute and seem pretty easy to care for.
Honestly I think I'd probably get bored. I'm not sure what I'd do to keep myself occupied, but at least I wouldn't have to work day in and day out.
