You just won the Powerball jackpot for $1.4 billion. Congratulations! What‘s the very first thing you would do after the money is in your account?

76 @Djwhat6 The first day I see those millions in my account, I would honestly just relax and do nothing. If I’m working that day, I would call off. I would use that day to self reflect. I would thinking about the endless possibilities and how much my life is going to change. Where the first place I’m going on vacation and what I’m going to do first on my bucket list. But the biggest thing I’ll be thinking about is how I won’t have to worry about money anymore and also I can finally leave my job. No more wondering will I have enough money to pay for bills or will I have enough to take care of my child. No more working 6 days and ALWAYS physically and mentally tired of my job. Just relax lol

62 @Dazzling_Ad_2633 After I win... 1. double check how long I have to claim (1 year in my state, but lets make sure) 2. sign the ticket while leaving space at the top so I can write in the trust that will be claiming (my state allows you to claim as a trust) 3. Make 3 copies of the front and back of ticket 4. Take picture of me holding ticket with numbers and details visible (front and back) 5. rent bank safe deposit box (high enough up not to flood if the sprinklers go off.) Place ticket and 1 copy of the ticket in double ziploc bags in the safe deposit box and take pictures of them in the safe deposit box 6. Back up my pictures to at least one cloud and one offline secure encrypted storage 7. Place both of the other copies in my home safe for now. 8. Research the top nationally ranked trust & estate law firms in my state and top wealth management firms in my state. 9. Wait three months without doing anything other than research & prep 10. Read every lottery horror story about lottery winners loosing it all I can find. 11. Think solidly about what I want to achieve with my winnings 12. Write up long list of goals and questions to ask my lawyer and Certified Financial Planner (CFPs have a fiduciary responsibility to act in the best financial interest of their clients) 13. get a PO Box, new phone & number, secure encrypted email address, VPN, PO Box, computer, password vault, and set them all up for maximum privacy 14. Scrub myself off social media as much as possible. 15. Meet with lawyers and after assuring I have lawyer/client privilege in effect tell them that I won the lottery and give them 1 copy of the front and back of my ticket I brought from my safe and discuss my goals and start putting together my trust and estate plan. This is probably around \~3 months after the drawing 16. After having them sign a non-disclosures agreement meet with wealth manager and start putting together my financial plan (capital preservation, inflation protection, and growth in that order) 17. After having them sign a non-disclosure agreement meet an accountant to keep tabs on the lawyer and financial planner 18. Once everything is setup and in order go to lawyers office and wait with his passport in hand while he goes to the lottery office to claim the prize as the trustee of my trust and gets his picture taken with the giant novelty check. This is probably around \~ 6 months after the winning. 19. Wait for whatever period for the govt to determine that I don't owe any back tax, child support, or have any warrants for the money to actually hit the accounts I've setup. 20. Meet with those loved ones I want to share the wealth with and loop them in after they sign the non-disclosure agreement I require they sign that my lawyer drew up and let them know about what provisions have been setup for them. 21. Take said loved ones on a trip to someplace warm with a sandy beach and good drinks and 5 star service. 22. Around 9 months after winning quietly quit my job with some excuse about why I am leaving 23. Start figuring out how to anonymously fund good causes using the foundation I setup way back around step 15. 24. Enjoy

28 @LaseMe Jerk off. I’d need post nut clarity

26 @keenedge422 This is kinda two questions, since there are the things I'd do when I found out I'd won the lottery and the things I'd do later, when money first hit my account. But let's pretend these things happen simultaneously and I find out I won the lottery when I wake up and get the balance update from my bank that shows all those zeroes in my account. First thing? Call in sick to work. Then I'm going to the bank, to an actual teller, and verifying the money is actually in my account and this isn't an error. If it's legit, I'm asking for as many $5 bills as they can give me and I'm gonna spend the next little while driving around town, balling up fives and throwing them at people, so they go "hey, why'd that asshole throw something at me? Oh it's money. Nice!" and hopefully then they have a pretty good day too, but not nearly as good as mine. Then I'm going to contact a professional financial planner and hire them to make sure I don't ever run out of money, and if they ask why, I can point to that thing with the fives to show that I clearly can't be trusted with money.

22 @vendeep OP: what is the first thing you do if you won? Responses in this thread: I will spend next year doing xyz.. OP: for fucks sake…. On serious note OP, I will order a bunch of gadgets on my wish list from Amazon with expedite shipment and book a 2 hour long massage for me and the wifey for the same day. As for the ticket, I play online (via my state lottery website) so there is no physical need to safeguard my ticket. Estate planning and all other procedurals will happen after I enjoy the massage.

20 @bahamapapa817 Giggle uncontrollably for a while then cry a little bit. Go to the bank and rent a safety deposit box and put it in there until I formulate my plan

20 @JustABitLost Tell everyone. Yes, I know this means tons of people will come out of the woodwork asking for money. I’d like to spend my early retirement denying all of them.

17 @doesnt_know_op 2 chicks at the same time

13 @Juicyj372 First day before claiming: delete social media, create a new email, get a new phone numbee hire a top attorney. Once I claim: split the cash between 3-5 different banks, 2-3 financial advisors. Figure out gift to friends and donations to nonprofits. Set aside 3 million for first 3 years. 1 million a year. First year: goto all the doctors and make sure my health is in tip top shape goto therapy to navigate my life, hire nutritionist and a personal trainer Year 2-3: travel the world

12 @Prowlthang I withdraw 40 or 50 grand in cash. Just to have some walking around money! And to feel it’s real. Maybe I drop of a few grand at some food banks and animal shelters anonymously.

11 @MalarkyD Change my underwear

11 @mandaraprime 1. Hire a top tier law firm to get the legal necessities in place (Kirkland & Ellis, DLA Piper or Hogan Lovells). 2. Hire one of the big five accounting firms (KPMG, Ernst & Young or Pricewaterhouse). 3. Hire bankers at J.P. Morgan Chase, Bank of America and Citigroup (no single bank will get it all). I would also put some of it in 3-5 large, stable regional banks as well. 4. Hire Investment Advisors at Vanguard and Fidelity (no single investment house will get it all). 5. Hire a 2-3 top tier commercial real estate brokerage firms. 6. Find a secure location to immediately relocate to while I sort out what to do that’s ready as soon as I claim the winnings. 7. Hire security. Put them all in a room and ask “what the fuck do I do now?” Profit. Edit: The question is what would I do first? The above are the first steps. Figuring out how to use and allocate those funds would be what happens in the ensuing months and years (Taking care of my family, philanthropy, investing, etc.).
